Traveling Mexico City

According to pre-Hispanic myth, the Aztecs built Mexico City as their capital after seeing an eagle perched on a cactus eating a snake as promised by the Gods. This depiction is now the coat of arms of Mexico and has taken on different meanings to different inhabitants. To some, it’s the symbol of good (eagle) conquering evil (snake); to others, it’s the preservation of Aztec history.

Today, Mexico City is the fifth most populated city on Earth, and it feels like it’s going through a renaissance. It could be because Mexico City has a new progressive mayor — Claudia Sheinbaum — an environmental engineer with a Ph.D. who has promised to move it forward by making pollution a priority. Or because chefs like Enrique Olvera at Pujol and Jorge Vallejo at Quintonil are creating world-class dining experiences.
