Challenging Transphobic Rhetoric In Small-Town America

My kids and I stopped at a local convenience store where we are frequent flyers. A day like any other, in a town where everyone knows everyone. My kids want a drink and a snack before we head off to do whatever it is that the rest of this day holds.

Today will be just a little different, but we don’t know that yet.

I open the door for the kids and usher them inside, tossing a friendly wave at the cashier. I spare a smile for the lady who cooks the fried food offerings typical of gas stations in this area. I’ve known her for years by name, and though we aren’t friends, we’ve always had cordial interactions and easy communication in passing.
