Jack of all Trades, Master of None

I was watching something special without realizing it in the moment. The surgery started with an osteotomy, a break in the bone with a drill before Kirschner wires were pulled taut through bone to metal rings on each side. Then it was a corticotomy, where the bone was cut in two to help align it. Dr. B is an orthopedic surgeon who further specializes in limb lengthening and reconstruction. I didn’t even know that was a thing. The patient presented with a deformity in the distal tibia. This surgery was the archetypal example of the Ilizarov procedure. It was euphoric, unfathomable, ingenious. The procedure involves pulling apart the bone (distraction) while keeping certain parts intact so that the body can use its natural ability to generate new bone between the two surfaces — allowing limb extension. It’s a beautiful example of how the best medicines are ones that allow the body to better access its own mechanisms to cure itself. Nature is omnipresent.
