Why one of Toronto’s wealthiest neighborhoods is named after a vegetable

Asan American who has now lived in Toronto for a year, I can say that anything remotely strange in Canada no longer shocks me. So, when my friend asked, “Want to walk around Cabbagetown with me?” I just nodded my head and smiled with no idea whatsoever what I was getting myself into.

My initial thought was my memory of the Cabbage Merchant from the kid's animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Whenever he’d have his cameo — consisting of his cabbage cart getting knocked over or him making a bizarre comment that somehow relates back to cabbages — my brothers and I would laugh until tears came out our eyes (for the record I was 10).
