Cari Mora by Thomas Harris

There was quite a bit of hype surrounding this novel when it first came out in 2019. A lot of the buzz came from how the notoriously reclusive Thomas Harris allowed himself to be interviewed to promote the novel. I remember thinking thinking at that time that I’d wait for the paperback. Then, of course, COVID happened in 2020 and I somehow never got around to securing a copy. Finally, at this year’s Big Bad Wolf, I managed to snag the paperback and here are my thoughts on it.

Prepare for a novel with many characters. Characters who do bad things and who have had bad things done to them. The novel doesn’t even mention Cari Mora, the titular character, until chapter 2, and only through the villainous Hans-Peter’s field glasses. Call it the GRRM Correlate if you like but basically, if the author is introducing a lot of characters, for sure, a lot of them will die. But I guess this is expected if you factor in that Thomas Harris wrote the Hannibal Lecter novels. So again, plenty of characters will be introduced. Sometimes, their whole point in the story is to die.
