In his 1989 book, sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term the ‘Third Place’ as the one outside home (your first place) and work/school (your second place) where people get through there day, but one that also becomes an opportunity to foster community and civility.
Starbucks founder Howard Schultz popularised the concept stating repeatedly that the coffee chain “from the beginning […] set out to provide just such an invaluable opportunity.” as stated in his 2007 memoir Onward.
