Hamilton — Theatre Review

Hamilton is back in Toronto after ending its run early back in 2020, and it is so worth the wait. For those who have somehow managed to miss this particular cultural phenomenon for the better part of the past decade, Hamilton is a musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda that debuted on Broadway in 2015. The musical is sung-and-rapped through, with the music heavily inspired by hip-hop, R&B, pop, and soul, in addition to traditional musical theatre. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote it after reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, and he describes the show as “America then, as told by America now.” During the 2016 Tony season, it received a record breaking 16 nominations and won 11. In 2020, when theatres were shut down, Disney released the long-awaited pro-shot of the original Broadway cast on their streaming service, Disney+, where it delighted audiences, and now it has finally returned to Toronto.
