Teacher’s Story: Navigating LGBTQ+ Identity in a Cambodian Classroom
<p>My journey of self-disclosure as a gay man in an international school in Cambodia began with a deep breath and a step into the management’s office. After months of sidestepping questions about LGBTQ+ matters from my fifth-grade students, I decided it was time to seek permission to be open about who I am — a happily married gay man.</p>
<p>In Cambodia, the conversation around LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance is still evolving. While there’s a growing awareness, societal and cultural norms often create unique challenges for international teachers at schools predominantly attended by local students. It’s crucial to appreciate this context to understand why seeking permission to be openly gay in such an environment is not only valid but necessary.</p>
