I’ve very much got a love hate relationship with ‘street-food markets’ and that is even truer in Spain. In a country where each city has so many ‘real’ food markets with their own eateries in each corner that generally offer exceptional value there is something not quite right about the highly commercialised Mercado San Miguel. That said, is a sight unlike much else and, since its refurbishment in 2009, has regularly appeared among lists of ‘must-visit’ things in Madrid. If your pockets are bottomless then it is the dream foodie destination. As you’ll read, it’s home to some fantastic eateries but it is also straight-up exploitative (we are talking a small tube of calamares for €16 and a pot of watermelon for €10). A couple of places do really stand out though and it was a pleasure to talk with their owners and founders.
