The Making of Taipei Charlie

<p>Twenty-two years ago, almost to the day, I was inveigled into saying yes to something that scared me deeply: an invitation to spend a couple of months in Taiwan, as a guest of the government. I thought it&rsquo;d be fun to revisit the blog posts I wrote&nbsp;<em>in situ</em>, and see if I had any different thoughts or memories today. So here&rsquo;s the first post, with&nbsp;<strong>bold</strong>&nbsp;added commentary in&nbsp;<strong>[square brackets]</strong>&nbsp;as needed:</p> <p>I&rsquo;m not a travelling man, famously so (ask my friends).
