The Making of Taipei Charlie
<p>Twenty-two years ago, almost to the day, I was inveigled into saying yes to something that scared me deeply: an invitation to spend a couple of months in Taiwan, as a guest of the government. I thought it’d be fun to revisit the blog posts I wrote <em>in situ</em>, and see if I had any different thoughts or memories today. So here’s the first post, with <strong>bold</strong> added commentary in <strong>[square brackets]</strong> as needed:</p>
<p>I’m not a travelling man, famously so (ask my friends). I’ve made not a virtue but a character flaw from staying home, not speaking airport, harbouring grand neuroses about what would happen to me if I strayed into funny foreign parts where they don’t speak English.</p>
