Student Spotlight: Liz Spaulding

LS: I’ve always loved to travel and study other cultures. I took French all throughout high school and college, but I found it very difficult until I was actually in France. Traveling in Paris and Belgium and actually being able to use it, I found I was able to improve so much quicker. I studied the European Union for my Masters, which was bizarre but really interesting — it was a brand new degree my grad school had never offered before.

What pushed me to study Arabic specifically is that I’m engaged to an Egyptian! A year ago, I couldn’t speak a word of Arabic, but there really is no better incentive! I mean, I’ve studied French, Italian, even Czech while living in Prague — but with Arabic I’ve seen myself improve so much better because it’s that personal connection that pushes me. He speaks fluent English and so does his whole family, but I know it means a lot to him that I’m learning. He was so surprised and now he helps me with my homework all the time!
