<p>“I assure you that this is a wonderful place, and for my profession the best place in the world.” That’s how a preternaturally musically-inclined 20-something, whose name was Wolfgang, described the city of Vienna in a letter to his concerned father. The boy had just defiantly left his birthplace of Salzburg, where he had an illustrious (but strongly disliked) job as court performer to the prince-archbishop, and he must have felt the need to report the promise that awaited him in his new home. If his father wasn’t convinced then, doubtless he was when his youngest child and only son gained the patronage of the emperor, the respect of fellow composers like the beloved Joseph Haydn, and a circle of enthusiastic friends and supporters in this important Austrian city.</p>
