Taiwan, the Switzerland of southeast Asia

I was once told by a friend who lived in Asia that Taiwan is the Switzerland of Southeast Asia, a green and peaceful country amidst the frenetic megalopolises of neighbouring countries. His words, half registered and stored at the back of my mind, resurfaced during a one-day stopover in Taipei, capital of Taiwan. He was right, it felt like Switzerland.

I was travelling from Manila where I had spent a week in the hustle and bustle of the city, commuting between Makati City, the business district, and Intramuros, the historic centre, while painfully putting up with the heavy traffic, the sweltering heat, and the inadequate urban transport system, a result of erratic urban development and lack of infrastructure planning.
