Can You Smoke Yopo? Ayahuasca’s Grandfather

In 2008 the Erowid.org user Almega posted his experience smoking the seeds of Anadenanthera peregrina, also known as Yopo and considered Ayahuasca’s grandfather. If the Ayahuasca entity is often portrayed as a female motherly figure, the Yopo experience brings a DMT-like experience that resembles a divine encounter with a male and ancient spirit. Usually, Yopo is consumed in the form of snuff in the indigenous snuff mix called Rapé.

The rapé is composed of a mix of herbs crushed with the objective of being snuffed. Each rapé mix has its own purpose, such as cleansing, meditation, alertness, relaxation and even engaging the participant in a psychedelic experience. In Brazil, the rapé is quite popular among psychonauts as a way to clean the respiratory paths and as a tool of reconnection with the present moment.
