Dublin needs a single climate action plan (not four) to shape a better future for all

Last December the Dublin Citizen’s Assembly Report called for an empowered assembly for Dublin led by a directly elected Mayor. Dublin City Council, the local authority that manages Dublin’s core with a population of near 600,000, is led by a chief executive (if you’re interested the job is currently up for grabs!) with a politician Lord Mayor elected by the council members every year. In reality the Dublin Lord Mayor is a figurehead but even more challenging is that Dublin City Council, like other local authorities, has limited powers and most of the key functions of the city, like housing, transport and policing, are driving by national government. The Citizens Assembly findings concluded that increased democratic ownership of power in the running of the city would increase accountability and the city’s quality of life. The evidence for this is by looking outside of Ireland at capital cities within Europe, like Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Helsinki etc, where the local authority has devolved powers and where the council or authority is predominately governed by elected members.
