Singapore’s Meritocracy: The Fundamental Flaws That Perpetuate Inequity

<p>Meritocracy operates on the premise that individuals initially start off on an equal footing socioeconomically to advance their socioeconomic status as much as they wish. However, in capitalist Singapore, it is impossible to establish a dictionary-definition meritocracy given the growing socioeconomic asymmetry that exists from birth. Instead, Singapore has settled for a bastardised version of meritocracy where the Singaporean educational system, far from being the social leveller it was conceptualized to be, unfairly lends merit to those from privileged backgrounds. Singaporeans from higher socio-economic backgrounds are being rewarded by the system not because they are genuinely more meritorious than those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, but ultimately because they have been brought up in environments that better nurture their ability to develop their intelligence and display their efforts.
