Does Technical Analysis really work? I built a stock simulator game to find out
<p>My mother was ranked in the Barron’s top 100 several times throughout her brokerage career. Her success came both from an intuition bred from a lifetime of experience with the market and a strict adherence to fundamental trading. Fundamental trading is what comes to mind when most people think of investing: evaluate the intrinsic value of a security within the context of the current economic and political climate — who or what is leveraged to benefit from what we can anticipate coming around the bend, along with underlying financials. For a long time, I believed this to be the only approach one could take towards trading, until I learned about something magical called Technical Analysis.</p>

<p>In stark contrast to fundamental analysis, technical analysts believe they can predict future price movement based on numeric patterns in historical data. As a math and puzzle enthusiast this idea particularly fascinated me. The notion that there can exist some formula or algorithm that optimizes market returns using only historic price data feels like modern-day alchemy. Magic, even.</p>
