Sickle Cell’s Game Changer: Nod to Gene Therapy Revolution
<p><strong>THE U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION RECENTLY</strong> gave the green light to two groundbreaking treatments for sickle cell disease. One is Casgevy, which uses a gene-editing technique called CRISPR, and the other is Lyfgenia, a gene therapy.</p>
<p>As a medical student, I remember seeing a young woman with sickle cell anemia.</p>
<p>I don’t remember her name, but I know she was in her 20s, around my age. Her parents each carried a copy of the gene but did not know it. She inherited one sickle cell gene from each parent.</p>
