35 Years of Sega Genesis

The Sega Genesis was an impactful console. From marketing to franchises and controversy, it has left its mark on the gaming industry. Today, Sega remains a prominent player in the video game market. Although they no longer make consoles, no one will forget their legacy. In time to celebrate its 35th anniversary, this article explores the company’s founding and the drama surrounding its most famous console.

Sega was an arcade company established in 1964 by coin-operated machine importers Marty Bromley and David Rossen. Initially, they created electro-magnetical games like 1966’s Periscope, the first 25-cent arcade machine. As the arcade industry switched to video games, Sega followed suit. They became known for technological marvels such as Zaxxon and Buck Rodgers. Both of which were highly successful.

With increasing popularity in the arcades, Sega’s next logical step was a home console. However, their biggest competitor, Nintendo, dominated in market impact. Sega released several failed systems. Their most successful attempt, the Master System, had better graphics than the Nintendo Entertainment System. But Nintendo still won because of their addictive gameplay, extensive advertising, and memorable characters. By the end of 1995, Sega’s Master System sold 13 million compared to Nintendo’s NES, which sold 61 million units.
