Herbert Baker designed the Secretariat Buildings. The buildings incorporate neo-Renaissance features such as the domes and the columns. Added to the neo-Renaissance features are Indian elements such as chhatris (canopies), jalis (carved perforated screens), chhajja (dripstone), carved brackets, and elephant heads on Corinthian pillars.

Today, the buildings contain important ministries of the Indian Government.
