Secret of Mana: An Oral History of Playing the JRPG in the 1990s
<p>My<strong>childhood revolved around video games. </strong>My earliest memories start with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_System" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Nintendo Entertainment System</a> (NES). Playing practiced my reading skill as it developed my sense of hand coordination. I enjoyed every minute.</p>

<p>Years into video gaming, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Super Nintendo Entertainment System</a> (SNES) was my jam. I experienced summers dedicated to Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs), specifically, masterpieces from <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_(video_game_company)" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">SquareSoft</a>, which authored <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_III" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Final Fantasy III</em></a><em> </em>and<em> </em><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Chrono Trigger</em></a>.</p>
<p>Where it began was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_of_Mana" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Secret of Mana</em></a><em>. </em>This piece celebrates the original SNES console game, describes what JRPG role-playing games are, provides historical context, shares personal nostalgia and memorable bits playing<em> Secret of Mana</em>.</p>
