Secret Beach

Somewhere, way Up North, between Empire and Frankfort, is my favorite beach, a secret beach. Tucked away on the shores of Lake Michigan for few to know about and even fewer to get to.

Getting there is, of course, half the fun and starts with a meandering drive along M22. A trip to the beach starts at the trailhead, which is what helps to keep it a secret. Parking at the trailhead is fairly limited, admittedly, I’ve only ever seen one or two other vehicles during my visits.

The hike to the beach is a little over two miles through a majestic northern Michigan hardwood forest. Stepping onto the trail, one is immediately surrounded by a mix of pine cedars, birches, hemlocks, maple, and beech, all stately hiding the existence of the jeweled shores on the other side.
