What Altman Didn’t Say in Melbourne (or: what he left for us to answer ourselves)

On Friday the 16th June 2023, Melbourne was graced with the presence of the imitable yet surprisingly grounded Sam Altman. I was lucky enough to attend this ‘fireside’ chat along with a fellow 2000 supporters, hackers and fanboi’s (me!) of Altman’s universe-released-as-product — ChatGPT by OpenAI at the Melbourne Convention Centre hosted by The Startup Network.

The 90 minutes or so filled the room with insights, laughter, intellectual curiosity, some moments of friction with a consistent and strong sense of Altman’s diplomatic deftness throughout. This last point was the most curious and teachable experience from the afternoon spent with one of the most powerful men in the globe. Altman’s status was comfortably forgettable. Not due to lack of charisma, intellect or command in the room, but because of it. It set the tone for the rest of the afternoon — the most powerful take-away wasn’t what was performed but the questions we walked away asking.
