What A Roofing Salesman Taught Me About Stereotypes and Bias

One beautiful afternoon, I was home doing some work on my computer, and I heard the doorbell ring. I immediately went to the door and opened it. A young man was standing in front of the door and when he saw me, he asked me: “Is the owner of the house home?”

I looked at him, and I knew I showered and was wearing my not-too-bad and not-too-good jeans — my mommy jeans in other words. Discreetly, I patted my chest to check if I was wearing a bra, thank God I was. Because you know…working from home, there is no guarantee I’m going to always wear a bra.
