When Did the Ancient Romans Disappear?
<p>Meanwhile, the Eastern Roman Empire, known as Byzantium, continued to exist and develop in the East. The Western Roman Empire, however, ceased to exist in the 5th century. But who were the last of the Romans? Famous Flavius Aetius, a consul and general who defeated Attila at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields in 451, is usually named such. Other notable individuals who lived slightly later and were true Romans were Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus, a senator and a Roman writer and historian. He held various posts under King Theodoric the Great and his successors. In 554, Cassiodorus retired to his family estate in southern Italy, where he founded the educational center — the Vivarium monastery — where he wrote his classical works.</p>
