The Right Place at the Right Time

While walking along the levee of the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania side, just across from Trenton in spring of 1996, I “received” the simple command: “SIT DOWN.” Hearing voices?! I had been under a lot of stress: I figured I must be losing it. I also didn’t like the idea of getting orders, but I warily looked around and noticed there was actually a bench nearby. Either it was new or I’d never really noticed it before.

I’ve since read that the “New York Subway Hero,” Wesley Autrey, Sr., heard a voice in 2007, just before he dove onto the subway tracks to save the life of an unknown man who had fallen during an episode of epilepsy. Mr. Autrey’s voice said, “Go save that life; don’t worry about your own; don’t worry about your daughters.” So he did. Fortunately, my faith was not tested so hard: sitting is pretty easy for me. So when the voice told me to sit, I sat. Seemed pretty harmless.
