Virtual Reality : A Research Based Review And Survey

Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment with scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. With advancement in technology and rapid evolution of VR, humans are expected to switch to virtual worlds to make their livelihood. Whether it is good or bad, it’s a separate topic of debate. This article present a critical review of few virtual reality based research studies and a related survey.

USABILITY OF THERAPIST’S USER INTERFACE IN VIRTUAL REALITY EXPOSURE THERAPY FOR FEAR OF FLYING: A REVIEW

Summary

A virtual reality project named virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has been implemented by Delft University of Technology (DUT) for treating patients with fear of flying. This project is a collaboration between two fields of studies particularly Psychology and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). DUT is in charge of technical part of the projects i.e. developing the VRET system. The system consists of two user interfaces (UI), one for the patient to experience flying and another for the therapist to control the session. The patient sits in a real airplane seat equipped with vibration devices, wearing a head mounted device (HMD), thus submerged in the virtual world entering the computer generated cabin experiencing various aspects of flying which is controlled by the therapist through the therapist’s user interface who is present in the same room as that of user.
