How I Re-integrated Myself into Our Household

William Faulkner once said, "You can’t eat for eight hours a day nor drink for eight hours a day nor make love for eight hours a day — all you can do for eight hours is work. Which is the reason why man makes himself and everybody else so miserable and unhappy.”

When I first read those words by Faulker, I saw the stark reality of its truth. Even though I might like to eat, drink, or make love eight hours a day, underneath it all I know I can’t. I would add to Faulker’s list that I can’t watch television or read books eight hours a day either. There really is only one thing we can do for that length of time every day: work.

Work is what I have been doing eight hours a day and forty hours or more per week for as long as I can remember. Most days I never had to give a lot of thought as to what my day would look like. It was all laid out before me, a seemingly endless stream of classes, terms, and school years.
