Installing (and using) RAR products on a Macbook

Afriend of mine shared some .rar files recently and, if you don’t already know, you can’t open them directly on an Apple Mac. Additionally, you can’t install a graphical version of WinRAR like you would on a Windows machine. The only available option is a command-line version of the program.

Installing RAR on Macbook is not easy but I really didn’t want to use another extraction tool. I get this opportunity to challenge myself to something new, and after some researching (a.k.a Googling) I came to a solution that I will share step by step with you.

Go to Winrar from Rarlab and download the program to your computer (a .tar file)

Extract the contents of the .tar file to your computer (I did mine in the Downloads folder). It will create a “rar” folder

Open a terminal window and navigate to the folder you extracted the program (my case was /downloads/rar/)
