Puru?????rthas are necessary and sufficient for a fulfilling and happy life. Puru?????rtha is a composite sanskrit word. The term comprises two words — ‘puru???a’ and ‘Artha’. The word ‘puru???a’ means “human being”, “Soul” as well as “Universal principle and soul of the universe”. The word ‘Artha’ means not only wealth or value, but also purpose or objective. So, the word “Puru?????rtha” etymologically denotes to the aim or purpose in life. The puru?????rthas are elaborated upon extensively in the Mah??bh??rata, the epic Indian poem that contains The Bhagavadg??ta, and are interwoven with yogic philosophy at the deepest levels. Each one of the puru?????rthas has many scriptures dedicated to it (the K??ma S??tra, the Dharma Sh??stras, and the Artha Sh??stras, among others).
