A History We All Share — Puppets

It is not clear exactly when the first puppets appeared, but it is well over 4,000 years ago. A terracotta doll with moveable head was found in the Indus Valley dating from 2,500 BCE, while “walking statues” were used for religious purposes in 2,000 BCE Egypt and have been found in tombs.

From these ancient beginnings, puppetry has become ubiquitous, taking on many forms — from gloves to masks, strings, and rods — and becoming one of the few traditions shared across the world.

Much of this is brilliantly on display at the Museu da Marioneta, tucked somewhat away from the tourist-beaten path in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.
