How Public Schools Leverage Dishonest Reasons to Discourage Marginalized Students
<p>My kids are fluent in Spanish, but we never included this fact on a school form. This was my wife’s deliberate choice.</p>
<p>“If we tell the school they’re bilingual,” she said, “they’ll assume they are deficient and put them in remedial English.”</p>
<p>I knew better than to argue with my wife on this point. She works as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in a nearby district. She has an intimate knowledge of all the faults in the system.</p>
<p>Public school offers a track that leads to future success, and a track that leads to a life of struggle. It’s up to parents to fight tooth and nail to ensure their children remain on the right path despite the efforts of all the malicious forces they might encounter.</p>
