The Sassy Savant: An Autistic Angeleno’s Peak into Public Transportation

Considering that I was born in the 80s, one big issue with riding public transportation in LA County during those days was the constant sight of graffiti sprayed on both the inside and outside of the buses. Tagging was the thing back then, and those buses were fair game to taggers; think of Spit defacing Ramon’s art on the movie Beat Street, but in South Central.

Also during this time was the crack epidemic. This even had an effect on riding the buses throughout the county. As a result, RTD often earned the nicknames of “Rough, Tough & Dirty” or even “Rough, Tough & Dangerous” (thanks, Ice Cube). Either way, riding from Florence Avenue & Figueroa Street to Imperial Highway & Crenshaw Boulevard (using these two intersections as examples) would be a hell of an adventure, albeit risky, during those times. A gentleman by the name of Mr. RTD covers way more ground on LA’s bus system during the 80s in this article; it’s a pretty good read for the bus aficionados and nostalgic crowd.

Learn More
