What Doesn’t Get Scheduled, Doesn’t Get Done

What do you do when it feels like a million things are prying for your attention? How do we get all these things done when 24 hours a day feels like the blink of an eye? Time seems to pass by seamlessly, the days are shorter and your to-do list feels like a never-ending list.

This is how I felt for some time in my life. As the days went by, I felt my life getting out of hand as the tasks kept piling up. And that is when I introduced order and structure into my life. I started by formatting a productive yet simple and doable routine.

“A plan is what, a schedule is when. It takes both a plan and a schedule to get things done.” — Peter Turla

I started to manage time effectively by creating a to-do list the night before and setting alarms and Google reminders to help get them done. I portioned ten-minute blocks of time to get the urgent but unimportant stuff done.

It could be doing the laundry, calling your business partner, scheduling a dentist appointment, buying groceries, et cetera, et cetera. As much as possible I keep my sleep-wake cycle fixed (unless I go overdrive) so I set alarms for waking up and winding down.

I set reminders for important meetings and seminars that I need to attend. I go through the day starting with urgent A-priority tasks followed by important B-priority tasks. I delegate tasks as much as possible, as suitable to the respective people.

“Don’t prioritise your schedule, schedule those priorities.” — Steven Covey

I just am not willing to take on too much anymore and so should you. Delegate as and when possible to the people around you. They can and will do it faster and better than you. Because overload leads to burnout and then you start spiraling down and wallowing in that mess.
