It’s Okay to Admit That Shaving Our Legs Is a Product of Misogyny

Itwas a hot August night. I took off my shirt, ready to collapse into bed after a long day of road travel. As I raised my arms, however, I noticed I wasn’t smelling so fresh, so I walked down the hall toward the bathroom so I could give my underarms a little splash.

Brynn, my 8-year-old niece, was there getting ready for bed. We talked for several minutes while I washed out my underarms with a washcloth, trying not to get my bra wet. We laughed and joked and told stories and it was all very ordinary except that I caught Brynn staring hard at me a few times. I figured she was just curious about the grooming habits of adults and didn’t give it much thought.
