India — President House of India, New Delhi, Delhi, India

The President’s Estate is located near the Secretariat Buildings and consists of 350 acres of land shaped like a crescent.

A nearby information board said the estate “is sited on the most important vista of New Delhi, the Central Vista connecting the Ridge to Purana Oila and the River Yamuna.” From where I stood at the amazingly ornate entrance gates, I could not see anything of the beautiful views.

Edwin Lutyens of India Gate (इंडिया गेट) fame designed the President’s Estate. Again, the information board told me that: “The core of the estate comprises of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Mughal Garden, which in a sense forms a whole, with the rest of the estate — the courts, stables, etc., spreading out around it. In the estate, Lutyens planned a variety of housing. In fact the only bungalows in Delhi designed by Lutyens himself are within the estate.”
