Hiding in Plain Sight (April 2023)

CityReach is a program that serves to support people experiencing homelessness in Boston by creating a community. Once a month, they invite people from areas like Carlisle to work alongside unhoused people near Boston Common so that we may come to know them a little better. When I go with the youth group to CityReach, what I look forward to most is hearing their stories.

Living on the street means trying to become as invisible as possible. If you need to sleep in the entrance to a store, you’ll need to disappear during the day so that the shop owners don’t yell at you to leave. If you are a woman, it means dressing in shapeless, dark clothes — or even men’s clothing — because it is safer to be a homeless man than a homeless woman. Being homeless is not a crime, but homeless people don’t want the police to notice them and tell them to move somewhere else. They have to hide in plain sight.
