Review: Pippa Funnell: Take the Reins

If there ever existed a school like the Sycamore Academy in Scotland that would accept an avid equestrian like me into their roster, I would think that I had died and gone to heaven. The concept of a riding school where they train and compete against other prestigious schools for the top trophy is a fun idea, however, having to schedule and organise your days like an actual school day, is not. You play as Jade, a young girl who has been recently accepted into the Sycamore Academy in Scotland where she and her other classmates must compete against other schools to become the best riding school in the world. However, along the way, Jade must battle against a saboteur who is out to destroy all of her hard work and effort to make it through the competitions. Figure out the mystery of the saboteur and become the best rider you can be!

This may sound like a fun concept, and a cool mystery for a game aimed at children, but don’t let my negative tone put you off thinking this game is any good. Instead, I’m left wondering — when playing games such as these — whether the developers or programmers of the game understand that most of their audience is going to be of the younger generation and will therefore be quite inept at video games. As an adult, there are certain elements of video games that I can understand and master much more easily than I did as a kid, however, equestrian games will always remain the bane of my existence. Why do they need to be difficult or overly complicated in their controls? Are you trying to break my computer? Because you have certainly damaged my sanity, video game!
