The Piltdown Man: an archaeological hoax
<p>Near the small town of Piltdown, about 60 kilometers from London, Charles Dawson (died in 1916), a lawyer and amateur archaeologist, conducted excavations in February 1912 and discovered fragments of a human skull. He had no doubt that he had found the remains of a prehistoric man.In 1871, Charles Darwin achieved literary success with his book "The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex," published by John Murray in London. In this work, he explained, with the precision of a great naturalist, that modern man is an animal species (Homo sapiens) that has evolved biologically from a very ancient ancestor belonging to the primate group. This was sometimes hastily translated into the provocative phrase "man descends from monkeys."</p>
