From History to Today: Paying Tribute to Black History Month’s Legacy
<p>The origins of Black History Month may be traced to the early 1900s. It was created to honour and recognise African Americans’ sometimes underappreciated contributions to the growth of the US.</p>
<p>Negro History Week was the forerunner to Black History Month, having been started in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. Woodson selected the second week of February to fall on the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two significant figures in African history.</p>
<p>Black History Month was formally declared in 1976 when the commemoration was extended to a full month.</p>
