The Psychology of Taking Sides between Palestine and Israel

Cheering for your home team is an accident of birth. Those born in New York cheer for the Yankees; those in Manchester for Manchester United. That team represents you and your people. You cheer their triumphs and bemoan their defeats. The other team is the enemy for the same arbitrary reason yours is your champion.

I wish it were more complex than that. Those born Israeli tend to believe Israel has the moral high ground, a prejudice that has also affected myself. We point to Hamas setting an elderly woman on fire and try to explain to the world that the only reason we are criticized for our harshness towards Hamas is that Hamas didn’t set your grandmother on fire.
