<p>The Royal Melbourne is one of the most exclusive golf courses in the world. Australia’s rich and famous, as well as many international stars, have played there. But for one disastrous week, it was uncertain whether there would ever again be a Royal Melbourne to play on.</p>
<p>The crisis occurred at the start of the 1978 Australian PGA Championship. Stars like Johnny Miller and Severiano Ballesteros were competing on the immaculately manicured 18 holes when the club committee made the greatest golfing blunder of all time. They sold almost a third of the course from under the golfers’ feet.</p>
