The Law & I — The Origin Story

mr. S. Soekotjo Dihardjo. For as long as I can remember, that’s how my father used to write his name on every administration document I ever laid eyes on. The title ‘mr.’ here is not short for Mister which is written Mr with a capital M, but for Meester in de rechten. Meester in de rechten is a Dutch academic title that is equivalent to a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in other countries. Later on, he changed the title to S.H., short for Sarjana Hukum. I can still remember how we had this brass nameplate on our gate with S. Soekotjo Dihardjo, S.H. written on it. I was too young to understand the significance of the title. It was just two letters that were written after my father’s name. That’s it.

Website
