I Was Once a Bird
<p>Although I never participated formally in a group, I was always interested in watching birds. I bought a book identifying birds and high powered binoculars to get a better look. I made a list of the different birds I saw: robins, goldfinches, cardinals, sparrows, doves, nothing exotic. Birds you may find in your acre of backyard if it was located in the Northeastern United States.</p>
<p>What was of more interest to me was keeping in shape. I was in my middle sixties and feeling much of my youthful muscle mass slipping away each year. To postpone the inevitable, I’d joined a gym and worked with the weights and on weekends I gave myself a treat and ran in Ridley Creek Park, a state owned twenty-five hundred acre woodland about four or five miles from my house.</p>
