Olympic Giggles in Ancient Greece

Now, back then, it was a ‘men’s only’ club. Sorry, ladies, you had to sit this one out. The ancient Greeks thought only freeborn Greek men could handle the pressure of winning laurel wreaths and eternal glory.

“So, no pressure, chaps — just win, and you’ll be remembered forever. Lose, and you might as well join the Spartans for a year-long boot camp!” the referee, probably an ancient stand-up comedian, quipped.

Originally, it was a footrace — one sprint to rule them all. But hold your chariots, folks, because over the years, they decided one race was not enough. “Let’s throw in some wrestling — nothing says ‘sportsmanship’ like a good ol’ wrestle with your neighbor!” someone shouted, and everyone agreed.
