Offside Istanbul

<p>Every so often I get a call from an editor or director asking me to help out with the editing of a film. Usually, a rough cut of the picture is already in place, but it lacks cohesion and clarity or dramatic composition. In a nutshell, my job, then, is to look at the material and rearrange it in a way that can best be understood and appreciated while emphasizing its quintessence. Though whether the film will be lighthearted, cynical, serious, or whatever mood there is, mostly depends on the subject at hand and is outside of my zone of influence.</p> <p><em>Offside Istanbul</em>&nbsp;is an intriguing documentary directed and photographed by Jonas Schaffter and an exemplary model for how character and passion can prevail in dismal circumstances and, ultimately, override the nature of a story.
