How Close Was The Women’s Finish at This Year’s NYC Marathon?

If you watched this year’s New York City Marathon, the most exciting part was the finish of the women’s race.

Usually, somebody runs away from the crowd well before the finish line. By the last mile, it’s pretty clear who is going to win.

But not this year. As the women turned into Central Park, five runners were in contention. Ten seconds elapsed between the winner and third place — and only twenty more seconds before the fifth place runner finished.

Since 2000, this was by far the closest women’s race in NYC Marathon history. The next closest finish was 2010 — when 68 seconds elapsed between first and fifth place. Only once — 1999 — did the men have a closer race.
