Surviving a Storm on North Fork Mountain

If there’s a more spectacular hike in West Virginia than the North Fork Mountain Trail, I haven’t found it.

Endless vistas, footpaths surrounded by mountain laurel, vertical stone cliffs that go on for miles … what more could a hiker want?

North Fork is part of the Potomac Highlands in the eastern part of the state — the same geological area that includes Dolly Sods and Seneca Rocks.

But North Fork is unique in that it’s the driest mountain in the entire Appalachian range. For this reason, the plant life is distinct from its surroundings. The ridgetop runs for 22 miles, and is covered in pine, not the spruce trees of nearby mountains.
