Getting Up Close and Personal With a Non-gentle Giant

I look up into the mouth of jagged teeth and try to imagine seeing a living T. rex towering over me. It’s a terrifying thought, picturing these humongous reptiles stomping around the western United States. It’s also awe inspiring, knowing that such enormous creatures once inhabited the land where people now live.

It’s amazing to think about the people who first discovered these bones, and the paleontologists who pieced them together to recreate the giant animals’ skeletons. I find jigsaw puzzles challenging, even though all the pieces are conveniently in a box.

These bones are more than 60 million years old. How fortunate that museum visitors are able to stand at the feet of these astounding creatures and envision a world where they ruled.
