What I learned about life from C-grade noisy students

In school, I was the uptight nerd. I hated the ‘noisemakers’ or noisies — the kids who knew everything but just wouldn’t score well — and I know they hated me back for being such an arrogant prude, but the teachers always managed to seat us next to each other. For the teachers, this was an easier way for the noisies to learn and do well in academics. For me, it was another year of pure agony.

But I still did my bit. And there were two main reasons why.

The first one was that I knew that if I helped, I’d be appreciated. And I was a regular kid who loved her share of praise.

The second one was the bigger reason. I didn’t know how to say no. I was a conformist.

Anyway, I loved that the noisemakers ‘needed’ me. They’d ask me to explain stuff, pretend to listen, and by the end of the session, praise my ‘intelligence’ (in other words, my ability to memorize stuff) and run off with my notes to make copies.
